About StutterWise
Who we are
StutterWise is a non-profit with two goals: to offer free speech coaching for people who stutter, and to deepen scientific understanding of how and why stuttering develops. We grew out of the PaBaSAT study, where we refined our training methods and gathered extensive data on stuttering and speech patterns.
All of our services are free. With participants’ consent, insights from coaching also support further research and continuous improvement of our methods. Demand for our free coaching is high, so there is currently a waiting list. When you get in touch, we will add you to it and contact you as soon as a place becomes available, while we keep expanding capacity.

Our approach: identify, train, re-train
Our coaching has three parts: identifying your individual stuttering patterns, pattern-based training, and re-training your muscle memory. See each step in detail.
Research shows that stuttering has genetic and neurological roots. It is not caused by nervousness or parenting, and it is nobody’s fault. At the same time, the brain stays adaptable throughout life: the speech patterns behind a stutter can be retrained, and a more fluent speaking rhythm can be built step by step through focused training. Through the PaBaSAT study, which researched stuttering and therapy over many years, we found strong support for this pattern-based approach.
There are many valuable approaches to stuttering, and different people benefit from different ones. Our focus is on identifying and retraining the individual speech patterns behind each person’s stutter.
Everyone who stutters has developed unconscious patterns that include stuttering. Moments of stuttering do not always fall on the same words or sounds, so those patterns are not always obvious—yet identifying them is essential for effective training.
Identify your stuttering patterns
Everyone who stutters has developed unconscious patterns that include stuttering. We start by pinpointing yours.
Pattern-based training
One-on-one sessions with a speech coach target your own patterns instead of a one-size-fits-all routine.
Re-train your muscle memory
Guided, repeated practice builds easier ways of speaking that can become more automatic over time.
Over recent years we have seen that working on person-specific patterns can lead to lasting progress. 85% of participants maintain fluency for at least 12 months after training.
The training itself often brings clear progress relatively quickly. Identifying each person’s patterns, however, is complex and time-consuming.
Our long-term goal is software that can identify—or help identify—individual stuttering patterns from speech samples. To get there, we need mathematical representations of a large number of speech and stuttering patterns, and algorithms that can recognize them.
